With a firm voice and his left hand placed atop a red-covered Bible, Joseph Ejercito Estrada swore to serve the country and people as he took his oath before the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Andres Narvasa, as the 13th President of the Philippines in the presence of his mother, Mrs. Mary Vda. De Ejercito, his wife Luisa who held the Bible, brothers, children, grandchildren, siblings and his best friend, Fernando Poe, Jr., inside the 114 year old Barasoain Church in Malolos, Bulacan, at 12:00 noon on .
Mr. Estrada is the first President to take his oath in Pilipino language and inside the newly renovated Barasoain Church where the country's first President, Emilio Aguinaldo, took his oath in . The Church was also the site of the Malolos Convention wherein the I Malolos Revolutionary Congress produced the Constitution of the First Philippine Republic a century ago.

The Palace was originally built as an I Antillean inspired stone house/or in Pilipino "bahay na bato" in the 18th century by a Spaniard - Don Luis Rocha. The house and the property were acquired by the Spanish colonial government as a summer residence and country house for the Governor - General of their Philippine colony. The district in which the property was located in - San Miguel - was known then as an idyllic place for summer retreats for Manila's rich and powerful figures. The Governor - General's summer house was called 'POSESION DE MALACANANG ".
In , a major earthquake destroyed the Palacio del Gobernador or the Governor's Palace in Intramuros, hence, Governor -General Rafael de Echague was forced to move to Malacanang. Since then, the Palace has served as the official residence of Spanish Governors General, American Civil and Military Governors and Presidents of the Philippines.
The 78 Stars appearing on the periphery of the medal represents the 78 provinces of the Philippines.
